TALKING about HIV/AIDS requires frank discussions on sexual matters, says an educator in East New Britain.
Br Stephen Musya from the Vunabosco Agro-Technical School said teachers and educators might have the information but young people would not like to hear it from them.
“As teachers and educators, if we want to educate young people, we need to form core groups or task forces
of young people,’’ he said.
“Give them all the knowledge and skill that we have at hand according to their needs.
“Let the young people do the talking and we need to be in the background.
“We may enter in for some sessions that do not directly deal with matters that may cause embarrassment.”
Musya said young people had a greater power to influence their peers, especially in the PNG context.
He said as a teacher, one was often bombarded with a lot of questions by young people about HIV/AIDS.
Musya said together with knowledge and skills, young people needed motivation to put into practice what they knew.
He said young people need to be motivated to be open about discussing such issues.
