Priest murder suspects caught

THE prime suspect in the murder of a Catholic priest at Kamulai, Goilala, is nursing gun wounds at the Port Moresby General Hospital after he was apprehended by police on Friday morning.
The suspect, who is believed to have shot the late Father Gerry Inao on May 4 at point blank range, was shot in the legs by the police highway patrol unit at Gerehu when trying to escape.
Central provincial police commander Liamo Asi said the arrest followed after two other suspects of the same murder case were apprehended at the Roburuga market.
“Police apprehended these two suspects at around 3pm last Thursday, who were both in possession of marijuana and live ammunition,” Asi said.
“They were brought in for questioning in the night and this led to the information of the whereabouts of our prime suspect.”
Asi said police acted quickly on the information given and raided the place where the suspects were hiding but two others escaped.
He added the five suspects were on the run for almost two months after the killing.
“I am appealing to the rest of the gang members to surrender because the people of Central will give information on your whereabouts,” Asi said.
“You will not escape because you’ve murdered a servant of God; one way or another, the long arm of law will catch up with you.”
Asi thanked people who gave information on the suspects and commended his officers for their efforts.
