A SCHOOL principal in Port Moresby is concerned that social media is one of the factors that contributes to school fights in the city.
Kopkop College principal Sivalinga Prasad Guruprasad said a school fight that involved some students from his school and another school in Port Moresby last week resulted from comments on Facebook.
“The issue started as a result of a student from one of the schools posting something about another student,” he said. Guruprasad said the post started a confrontation between the students and only the involvement the school management prevented the issue from getting out of hand.
He said a Facebook post started the problem.
He said students should not to take issues into their own hands as it may lead to bigger issues.
“They must always report to either parents or teachers such issues so that people in authority can help sort it out peacefully and appropriately by following the correct protocols,” Guruprasad said.
One of his teachers, Kenneth Wunum, said many young people, including students, have made Facebook their world.
“What we learn from our students is that they spend most times on Facebook and use that medium to influence their fellow peer groups by posting threats against each other,” Wunum said.
National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Perou N’Dranou said it was a crime to post threats against another person on Facebook.
