A PRISONER who escaped from Kerevat jail while serving time for being in possession of firearms was recaptured last Saturday.
John Tavune Toburuk, 24, of Ulagunan village in the Kokopo/Vunamami LLG had been jailed by the Kokopo district court for one year and eight months for being in possession of guns.
Acting East New Britain police commander Senior Inspector Joseph Tabali said Toburuk was arrested at the Kokopo beach front by a police patrol.
“Police closed in on him and when he realised there was no way to escape, he gave himself up,” he said.
He escaped from prison on March 27 while on a work party in the jail premises.
He now faces the charge of escaping from lawful custody.
Tabali also appealed to residents of East New Britain not to harbour prisoners and to report immediately to police if their relatives in jail come to their homes.
He said prisoners must serve time for crimes they had been convicted for.
