THE Buiebi prison in Southern Highlands will accept only prisoners who have been tested negative for the Covid-19, says acting jail commander Supt Samson Kisa.
“We will only accept convicted prisoners and those on remand with medical clearance documents,” Supt Kisa said.
“If they do not have any clearance, they will not be accepted.”
The prison for Southern Highlands and Hela is currently overcrowded with 150 on remand and 30 convicted prisoners.
“New inmates referred to Buiebi from the Mendi and Tari must undergo a Covid-19 test and once cleared will be allowed in,” he said.
“There is currently no isolation facility at the prison.
“And because of the overcrowding, any new inmate with the Covid-19 will easily spread the virus among the prisoners, warders and their families.
“I have 40 warders. The Hela and Mendi courts should speed up hearing cases because those on remand are causing overcrowding.”
