THREE prisoners escaped from Baisu jail in Mt Hagen on Wednesday morning.
Jail commander Supt Timbi Kaulga said prison officers and police were investigating the incident.
He said the three escaped during heavy rain on Wednesday morning.
Sources at the jail said that they were facing death penalty.
The sources said the three had been detained at the high-risk prison at Bomana and were transferred to Buimo, then to Baisu because of their good behaviour.
They said the escapees were dangerous and related to bank robbery suspect William
Kapris.
But Kaulga said the only prisoner related to Kapris did not
escape.
“These are all lies as there are investigations continuing. As far as I know these escapees are not related to Kapris,” Kaulga said.
“I have advised the assistant commissioner CIS highlands David Kanambo of the break-out but could not give any details on their escape yet as my men are carrying out investigations.”
He said there would be an internal investigation therefore, he declined to release further
information.
Correctional Service Assistant Commissioner highlands David Kanambo said that he had been briefed by Kaulga.
He said he would find out through the investigation.
