Private firm keen to build refuge centre for women
SANCTUARY Hotel managing director James Pang has pledged K10 million to build a centre for underprivileged women and children in Port Moresby this year.
Pang said he had taken the money generated from his business to secure a 4,000 square metre block of land at Erima and was waiting for the building board’s approval to start the project.
Pang said stage one of the project would be the construction of a 20-bedroom accommodation, including an ablution block and a counselling conference space.
“I have seen many women and children who have been abused by their partners or parents and have no place to go and are out on the streets of Port Moresby homeless,” he said.
“I proposed an idea to the Catholic church about building this refugee centre and they agreed to oversee the centre and provide counselling to victims who go there.”
Pang said the initiative was his contribution to help vulnerable people in society.
The project is entirely self-funded, however, Pang appealed to interested organisations whether NGO’s, private sectors, church organisations, provincial and government agencies to support and expand the project.
Pang said Nippon Paint had come on board to help.
He said plans were underway to build similar centres in other parts of the country.
