Probe into killings slow
The National, Monday July 6th, 2015
INVESTIGATIONS into recent killings in Jonita village outside Popondetta have been slow due to lack of cooperation by witnesses, says Northern police commander Jacob Singura.
Singura said he had not received any report on the investigations because the witnesses were not coming forward with information on the incident.
The incident took place on April 25 in which three murders took place.
A local man was involved in a traffic accident but it in suspicious circumstances and two Western Highlanders were brutally killed along the Oro Bay Popondetta Highway.
Singura said only one suspect had been arrested and was in custody while awaiting his court case.
“Witnesses are not coming forward and a good case cannot be produced without sufficient information,” Singura said.
He said that it seemed to be a trend in the province of such incidents in which investigations were not completed.
Following the Jonita killings, the Highlands community in the province presented a petition to Singura.
The petition raised concern that all the murder cases that had occurred in the province to date did not have any record to show fully completed investigations.
Singura said people were not helpful.
“I’m appealing to the witnesses to come forward to assist us with these investigations because we cannot force people,” he said.
