WORK on a new police station in Kabwum, Morobe will start once the design is approved by the provincial police commander, an official says.
District development authority (DDA) chief executive officer Stanley Leka said the project is expected to cost more than K600,000.
Leka said police staff housing were being maintained and the DDA was building a house for the police station commander.
Leka said the police station design would be presented to Morobe police commander Supt Alex N’Drasal this week for approval.
He said for a long time, the district had no regular police personnel with community policing work over the years mostly carried out by police reservists and auxiliaries.
“The district’s local level governments (LLGs) need at least 20 full time officers. Five for each of the four LLGs and 10 for Kabwum police station,” Leka said.
He said Kabwum needed regular police presence and had asked the police headquarters in Morobe to assign a police station commander (PSC) once the facilities were in place.
Leka said they hoped to have the new facilities completed by the end of the year.
Kabwum DDA has also planned to buy a new police vehicle for the district.
Supt N’Drasal said he would go over the design before approving it as police stations had their own requirements and standards.
He commended the initiative taken by the Kabwum DDA in providing facilities for police which would significantly improve policing in the district.
