Prominence should be given to prosecutors, detectives, says officer

PROMINENCE has to be given to police prosecutors and criminal investigation division officers as they perform the core functions of the police, says Morobe police commander Chief Insp John Daviaga.
Chief Insp Daviaga made the comments after observing that some major and minor cases were thrown out by the courts because they were not prepared and presented properly.
He is urging police station commanders in Morobe to support prosecutors and police detectives when dealing with cases.
“We know of serious cases being thrown out of the courts for want of police files or that the files were not done properly to guide the court,” Chief Insp Daviaga said.
He said in some cases there were no proper evidence presented submitted to the court leading to the dismissal of cases.
Chief Insp Daviaga suggested that the prosecutors and detectives be provided support during the investigation of a case to presenting it in court.
“They have to be provided the logistical support, be given more training and refresher workshops, and to recognise their efforts,” he said.
Chief Insp Daviaga also warned that some court cases could involve political pressure and bribery from outsiders.
