Investors and tourists will not come to a place where there is violence or is prone to violence, National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop says.

“Promoting safe environment will create employment. We got to create that environment by bringing peace,” Parkop told city residents during the Walk for Life last Sunday.

“We got all the products for our tourists but because there is violence, tourists fear coming to Papua New Guinea.

“That’s why they are not coming, this is why the tourism industry is not creating job employment for the people of Papua New Guinea

“Promoting safe environment will bring more employment.”

Comparing Papua New Guinea with some other Pacific Island countries, Parkop said PNG had a lot to offer tourists but the majority chose others “because of our reputation as a violent country”.

The Parkop-led Walk of Life in Port Moresby promotes lifestyle and good health – aspects being pursued by many moderns cities in the world – and he hopes the influence pays off so tourists can see the change of attitude in the city.

“When we come, we are coming for our health but we are also coming to promote peace and security,” he said.

“We are the face of our nation, we should promote good image and good values so that Papua New Guinea will change and we should create good opportunities working environment for ourselves.

“Walk for Life is achieving more than health.

“We are achieving a lot of things which the government can not.”

He said it better the government and the people must work together to promote to create a peaceful environment in the country that will help to lure tourists and investors into PNG.

Parkop said there is nothing we can do than just creating a peaceful and safe conductive environment for tourists and business investors so that they can fear nothing in PNG.
