Promote skills

Letters

YOUR front page editorial ‘O’Neill: key to job creation lies in investments in private sector’ (The National, May 25) prompted me to write.
For far too long, we have been relying on resource extraction and foreign investments to create job opportunities and promote economy development.
When world prices drop foreign investors leave, lay off staff, we go back to square one trying to impress new investors to come invest and provide employment again.
This trend seems to lead us nowhere but in a circle.
If we want lasting solutions to our economic and social development, then we need to look at entrepreneurship skills development to create new paths and opportunities.
Promoting local innovative and creative skills development is key to igniting individual passions and talents to become self-employed.
This will spark growth in trade and investments, thus creating employment opportunities.
Successful world economies are those built around innovation and creativity through small-and-medium enterprises (SMEs), which have developed over time.
