THE Porgera Joint Venture and the Department of National Planning and Monitoring are promoting the water, sanitation and hygiene (Wash) programme in schools.
The JV’s community development section and officials from the Education and National Planning Departments launched the project at Mungulep Primary School. It was witnessed by national Wash programme manager Takale Tuna.
Tuna said it was encouraging to see the PJV taking an interest in the national programme.
“What I’m witnessing here is encouraging because it is part of the bigger picture that the government is embarking on. The partnership between PJV, the school and the community is very encouraging. We are also piloting projects around the country,” Tuna said.
PJV community development manager Jacqueline Nen said the mine medical centre had reported health cases relating to preventable diseases.
“One of the key reasons the PJV is embarking on the Wash project is because of the preventable diseases. There are health issues in relation to washing hands not only in the community but also at the workplace.
So it is important we carry out the message.”
