Prompt police response can save lives

Letters

THE Family and Sexual Violence Unit (FSVU) is an integral part of the police force.
It serves the purpose of attending to family and sexual violence or gender-based violence issues.
It is established at designated police stations throughout the country.
Not all police stations should have an FSVU set up.
This would depend on internal arrangements between the police and the organisation or NGO responsible.
All police stations in NCD have FSVUs with fully trained male and female police officers manning them. They are supposed to be working 24/7.
Let us hope that there are internal arrangements for general duty police to fill in when FSVU officers are not present, for whatever reason.
I wish to direct a series of questions to the Police Station Commander of the specific police station in NCD (no idea) where the father of the late Grace Gavera had reported her assault and sought assistance.
Gavera, 26, from Central, worked for the Education Department in Port Moresby. She was assaulted twice last month and died from her injuries.
We read that on two occasions Grace’s father reported her case to the police station, but he was not entertained or offered help by whoever was there.
If police had intervened at that time Grace would mostly likely be still alive today.
Who was there at the police station when Grace’s father went there for help? Was it an FSVU officer or just another ignorant, rude officer.
It is common knowledge that the police will hide the identity of the police officer who was there at the time to save face.
Is the police going to take responsibility or still come up with their bags of excuses to cover up?
If I was a family member or relative of Grace’s family, I would take the police to court for failing to do their mandated duty.
How active is the FSVU performing its mandated role to provide legal support to survivors of FSV/GBV in NCD, especially at the counter?
An update or clarification by FSVU should be recommended.
As for Grace’s father’s visits to the police station, it doesn’t really matter who served him, whether he or she was an FSVU officer or not, the police was still duty-bound to act on his complaints seriously.
On the other hand, I commend the police for apprehending the animal who took away Grace’s life.
Give him the death penalty.
He deserves to die like an animal too.
