Prosecutor brings translator to assist woman in court

A TRANSLATOR had to be brought into court to help a woman charged with assault causing grievous bodily harm to understand what she was being told by the magistrate.
Jennifer Opus was accused of stoning her husband’s second wife Julian Enoch while she was having a bath.
Police prosecutor Const Peter Samghy brought in a court clerk to assist Opus from Enga after she failed to understand what Magistrate Ernest Wilmot was telling her about the case, both in English and pidgin.
Opus first appeared in court on Tuesday.
But Magistrate Wilmot adjourned the case to Wednesday because of the language problem.
The court heard that on Oct 18 at around 1pm, Opus was alleged to have stoned Enoch, her cousin, at Morata while she was bathing outside.
Enoch was injured on the head and taken to the Port Moresby General Hospital where she received 13 stitches.
She was discharged after three days and lodged a complaint with police.
Magistrate Wilmot remanded Opus in custody and adjourned the matter to Dec 9.
