POLICE officers are finding it difficult to transport remandees to at the Committal Court in Waigani, National Capital District.
This is according to a senior prosecuting officer currently handling cases before the court.
The officer, who refused to be named for obvious reasons, told The National yesterday this had been the case over the years.
He said the prosecuting division at the Boroko police station was handicapped in terms of manpower and logistics, including vehicles, to assist them.
“So many times we have raised this complaint and had it written down in black and white but have all gone to waste.
“Our cries have fallen on deaf ears.
“We are currently using a 15-seater bus and a Toyota 10-seater to transport officers as well as those in police custody,” he said.
He said the bus was donated by the law and justice sector while the 10-seater troop carrier was given by the Australian Federal Police.
“We desperately need another vehicle for our officer-in-charge to carry out his duties effectively and another to transport detainees from the cells to the court house,” the senior police prosecutor said.
He also said training specialist areas in the force was lacking since the final pass-out in 2004.
Specialist areas included forensic, prosecution, crime investigative and traffic.
