MORE funding should be provided for the rehabilitation and education of prisoners, according to a detainee.

Bomana prison inmate John Naea said this during the presentation of a vehicle by Central Governor Kila Haoda to assist the Correctional Service rehabilitation programme this week in Port Moresby.

Naea said inmates should be equipped with skills and knowledge which they could use when they had served their jail terms.

He said some prisoners after their release returned to crime because it was the only thing they knew as a means to survive.

“Many of us ended up in prison because of lack of opportunities and as a means of survival, we do not want the vicious cycle of going in and out of the prison,” Naea  said.

“We want to do something worthwhile. We want vocational and skills-based training.”

He said he wanted to do something useful when he returned home to Central.

“We recognise that many development plans are hampered by law and order problems, either as a result of spill-over from the National Capital District, or from our own electorate,” he said.
