Province lists prioritises for 2020

THE Southern Highlands government has six priorities for next year which will be reflected in its budget to be approved in Mendi this week, Governor William Powi says.
These priorities include:

  • A police partnership programme to increase manpower and housing capacity, judges’ residence, K3 million funding to the Mendi development authority (DDA) to build a new court house complex and K1 million for the Buiyebi Jail;
  • subsidising of parental component of school fees for all the elementary, primary, high and secondary schools as well as vocational and technical training (Tvet) colleges;
  • the establishment of a Tvet college in each electorate with students and dropouts identified to be sent to these institutions from K20 million;
  • the development and growth of potato farming throughout the province with each district to be supported with K2 million in order to supply the Pangia Potato Factory;
  • the roll out of the rural electrification programme; and,
  • All levels of government, bodies, authorities and programmes to be adequately supported in order to carry out their service delivery, management and governance in the province.

Other important priorities include the 2020 PNG Games to be hosted in the province as well as support for rugby league and support for youth and women’s groups and churches.
