EAST New Britain plans to use geothermal power as an alternative electricity generating source.

Governor Ereman ToBaining Jnr returned from a trip to Iceland last week to see how they used geothermal energy sources.

ToBaining said he was happy with the visit because it was important for the province.

He was accompanied by Rabaul MP, Allan Marat.

The province is interested in the Matupit hot spring generated by Mt Tavurvur and plans to set up the geothermal project there.

ToBaining said the visit to Iceland was part of the plan to set up the geothermal project at Matupit.

Experts from Iceland will visit Matupit to survey the area and conduct a feasibility study for the alternate power generating facility.
