Provincial administrators reminded of commitment
PROVINCIAL administrators have been reminded of their commitment to assist the Electoral Commission conduct the local level government elections which starts this month.
Department of Provincial and Local Level Government Secretary Dickson Guina said they had agreed to “take on the responsibility” of conducting the LLG elections.
Only nine of the 22 provinces had signed a memorandum of understand with the commission to provide their assistance.
They are Central, Hela, Morobe, Madang, East Sepik, Southern Highlands, Manus, West New Britain and Northern. The other provinces are yet to express their commitment.
“We want to see the provincial governments and the district development authorities participate in this whole process (and) helping the commission and my department in the running of the elections.
“Provincial and district administrations have conducted LLG elections in the past. I know that all the provincial administrators can (say) it can be done again for this election. It is possible.
“We can do it at a minimum costs.”
