PROVINCIAL peace and good order committees from Enga and Western Highlands have given two Moge clans two months to pay compensation to a senior police officer based in Mt Hagen.

The peace teams from the two provinces met yesterday in Mt Hagen and gave the Moge Komunka and Aglika clans until Dec 7 to compensate Chief Sgt Moses Kalandi K100,000 and 70 pigs.

During a peace meeting last Friday in Mt Hagen, community leaders from Komunka and Aglika clans accepted the compensation given by the relatives of Kalandi from Lapyan Kilyu clan in Enga’s Laiagam district.

The peace mediation team from Enga led by chairman Mose Pyale met with Thomas Wama, the chairman of Western Highlands provincial peace and good order committee, and told the two clans to pay K200,000 and 140 pigs as compensation by Dec 7.

Kalandi, an officer in-charge of the police task force, was attacked by four men armed with knives and axes on Aug 17 at Warakum.

Kalandi said that he was accompanied by another reserve policeman, Lain Aiyok, and drove to the Warakum police dog unit and dropped off Const Jessie Yama around 5.30pm.

On his return he was attacked on the road after he stopped the police vehicle to question a man who threw a beer bottle at the vehicle.

Kalandi said the three men fought with Aiyok while one with an axe chopped him on his left thigh.

He is now confined to bed in his house and needs to go for further operation overseas as recommended by doctors at the hospital.

Kalandi said that two of his attackers were arrested by police and charged with attempted murder and were remanded in Baisu jail awaiting court appearances.
