A RED hot PS Rutz have sent out an early warning to other premiership contenders after defeating competition leaders Port Moresby School of Excellence (POMSOE) 2-1 in the Port Moresby Super League men’s football competition on Saturday.
Striker Frank Tulem scored in the 24th minute before Lap Embel equalised in the 65th minute.
But Rutz got back into the lead when fullback-cum-striker Jeremy Lasalo scored in the 70th minute.
The victory has propelled the Sepik team to the top of the ladder with 23 points, while POMSOE is on 22 and Yamaros on 21 points.
Tulem was booked for unsportsmanlike behaviour while veteran Ken Gule was yellow-carded for a delay in re-starting play.
The competition ladder as of yesterday is: PS Rutz 23, POMSOE 22, Yamaros 21, University 20, Cosmos 19, Mungkas 18, Defence 14, Spartans 16, Momase 6, YMC 6.
POMSA match official Robert Sabadi confirmed last night the Rutz victory was one of two upsets of the weekend.
The other upset was recorded by Mungkas.
The ETSU-sponsored team from the Autonomous Region of Bougainville humbled the high-flying VAT Yamaros 2-1 in yesterday’s match.
Mungkas representative footballer Andrew Marampau fired a long-range goal in the 41st minute to put his team in front at half time.
In the second half, Bogia import Adrian Komu cushioned the lead in the 68th minute to put them beyond reach.
But Yamaros’ Max Sengum pulled one back in the 80th minute to add some respectability to the score.
In other matches, Cosmos outplayed Defence 3-1 while Spartans avenged their first round loss beating YMC 1-0 in an entertaining scrap.
On Saturday, University struggled to beat Momase 2-1 to stay in the contention for the inaugural POMSA Super League championships playoffs.
In women’s Super League matches, Mungkas thrashed a young POMSOE side 5-0, Guria beat Spartans 2-0 and Yamaros hammered the Rigo women, YMC, 4-0.
On Saturday, University forfeited to Lamana who are likely to be booted out of the competition.
The women’s unofficial competition ladder is Guria 33, Mungkas 29, University 29, Spartans 24, Yamaros 21, POMSOE 13, Lamana 12, PS Ruts 12 and YMC 3.
