Public servant facing charges over Manumanu land deal

National

A PUBLIC servant who allegedly inflated the value of the Manumanu land proposed to be a naval and army base will return to court next month for a committal hearing.
Waigani Committal Court Magistrate Garry Unjo told Moses Kila, the assistant valuer-general of the Lands and Physical Planning Department, to return to court on Nov 25 for the submissions on the sufficiency of evidence.
Kila, 43, of Kwalimurubu village in Rigo, Central, was charged with abuse of office, forgery, uttering, corruption of a valuator and stealing by false pretence.
It is alleged that he submitted a valuation certificate and report for K46.6 million for the pieces of land to Kumul Consolidated Holdings.
KCH had bought the land for K7 million and K9 million on Feb 27, 2015. He is on a K3,000 bail.

  • I cannot comprehend that a person can be out on a lousy K3000 bail compared to the K16m public funds he has colluded with others to steal. Is that a fair justice?

  • How did the government blindly accept this one valuation report and paid for the land without obtaining valuation reports from two other valuation firms for comparison purposes. Isn’t that the common practice when obtaining quotations for goods and services from suppliers?
