The longest serving public servant in Madang received K100,000 and the government car he had driven for 15 years over the weekend for his loyalty and long service to the people of the province.
Peter Torot, from Rakunai village in East New Britain, came to Madang in 1974 as a young district administrator, or kiap they used to called in those days.
He served in parts of Raicoast, Usino-Bundi, Simbai in Middle Ramu, Sumkar and Bogia before settling down in town at the provincial headquarters.
He met his wife Philomena, who was a nursing officer at the time, at Simbai and got married.
Torot raised his family in Madang and was committed to his job for 45 years.
He said being a public servant was being committed to serve the people “entrusted in your care as the person responsible in making decisions” that would benefit them.
Governor Peter Yama said Torot was the nephew of
St Peter Torot and the loyalty and commitment to serve with honesty and humbleness was in the blood line of the Torots, so he did well.
“Torot does not take sides in politics and did not have any allegation against him because he was always quiet and did his work with honesty,” he said.
Yama said public servants were tools to service delivery and Torot was one special tool that served Madang for 45 years.
Hundreds of public servants gathered at Smugglers Inn Resort on Saturday and farewelled Torot.
They feasted and exchanged gifts.
Torot’s government vehicle that he drove for 15 years was given to him as gift, along with a cheque for K100,000 as the Madang government and administration’s appreciation for his service.
Torot told public servants: “If I may have done you wrong or upset you in any way in my decision making, I ask for your forgiveness.”
