Public servants abandon district

Letters

PORGERA district has a malicious administration and is overlooked by the Public Service Commission of Papua New Guinea.
Prime Minister James Marape’s slogan to ‘Take Back PNG’ is fancy but most of the public servants posting in the district are unattached officers.
Public Service Commission has no record of its public servants working in the rural districts.
Most of the public servants are in the provincial centres.
The public servants posted to Porgera district administration are all not working there.
They live in Wabag and get paid there.
Porgera is one of the unique districts which has the potential to become a province.
The office is dysfunctional and is always locked on Monday to Friday.
The district administrator has access to resources such as vehicle, accommodation, mining allowance, Porgera Development Authority fund and but is living at Wabag.
This led to the rise in law and order issues and illegal mining that is Porgera facing.
Last year, there was no meeting held or plans made to address issues to revert the lawlessness.
Government and the resources developers continue to spend money by declaring state of emergency when agencies on the ground cannot take control of the situation.
We are fed up of the ill officers attached with the district services .
We are calling on the public service minister to visit the rural areas and fix such issues.
NGO groups and concern community leaders are calling on the public service minister to come to Porgera.
Tax payers money is wasted on non-productive officers.

  • I support the post above. Lagaip Porgera MP also needs to be checking whether his districts are functioning or not.
Public Servants from his districts seems to be seen outside off their district more often and we wonder sometimes.

  • Their actions is a familiar one across PNG.
Public servants probably collectively steal more from their country and their own people more than politicians
    They basically take PNG backward.

  • When people talk about Public Servants I immediately think about my hard earn wage and and the tax rip-off to support these leaches.

  • The public service commission needs to tighten control over the behaviour of those so called public servants and introduce tougher penalties for public servants who not serving in their postings. They should be shown the exit and then you can create employment opportunities for new committed people to be recruited to serve in rural areas.
