Push for benefits for country, landowners

Letters

PRIME Minister James Marape recently commented on the need to process the Papua LNG project without further delay. As a landowner, I agree with him.
We have waited too long and would like to see this project reach its development stage as soon as possible.
One factor that is not so pleasing to take note of is the percentage of royalty to the landowners.
About 1.2 per cent is the expected amount as stated by Marape.
But can this low percentage sufficiently benefit landowners?
I understand that compensation would be paid to landowners whose land the pipes would run through.
But it would be only a one-off payment and would be made at the start of the project.
I suggest that in any future ventures and operation of industries by multinational companies, the Government should enforce a law for compensation.
It would be like a rental fee that project operators have to pay every two years or so in the duration of their project operations.
Both the Government and the landowners should each receive their share out of this on a regular basis.
