EDUCATION Minister Nick Kuman says early childhood education should be encouraged in communities.
He was commenting on a statement by Minister for Community Development, Youth and Religion Soroi Eoe that early childhood education must be encouraged at village level.
“We want to see children as early as four or five years old to go to the nearest school. Early childhood learning centres must be set up,” Kuman said.
“There are a lot of issues centred on the responsibility of parents that must be corrected.”
He said the aim of the Government was send children to school, taking that responsibility away from parents.
“This is where the parents should take responsibility when the child is born. Education starts when the child is still young. By the time the kids reach the age of three, the mind starts to develop. This is the best time of the children’s development. They pick up a lot of things.
“The early childhood policy continues to support the education sector where there are no early childhood programmes. Now we are encouraging early childhood.
“We set up early childhood centres in villages and pre-schools and it will go a long way in educating children at an early age.”
