Put nation’s interest first

Letters

JAMES Marape and Peter O’Neill and their supporters have been at each other’s throat since the political divorce – bashing each other at every opportunity.
In the last few days, its intensity has reached new heights with the Porgera issue.
Makes me wonder who is the real enemy here?
We, Papua New Guineans, are not each other’s enemy.
We should be united against a common enemy Barrick.
Why provide Barrick with the ammunition to destroy us.
This division has weakened us tremendously, and given Barrick the stamina to challenge our birthright on our land.
PMJM and O’Neill should put aside their political interest and rally the nation behind the flag for this battle.
It is no longer politics.
The national security of PNG is at stake here.

  • The Achilles heel of progress in PNG is greed and jealousy among ourselves. These are demonstrated at all levels of societies. We remain our own enemies and that remains the lapse in empowerment of ourselves. Foreigners and corporate entities take advantage of this internal division to exploit us. Making us beggars in our own land.

    • I totally agree Leslie. We have been our own worst enemy, collaborating and conspiring with foreign capital interests to deprive us fair share of our own resources. Democracy and freedom of speech must not give us the license to betray our motherland. In fact I strongly believe the Democratic system has misguided our nationalistic values, weaken our resilience and defenses and making us very vulnerable to exploitation and manipulation by Neo-colonial influences and oppressive capitalism. It is an imperial tool of subjugation. It is time we review and totally overhaul our system of governance to achieve our Independence aspirations.

  • Douglas, we have been bystanders for too long collecting rent from our resources and fighting over bones while foreigners take away everything. Our resources laws were set up by foreign paid consultants for foreigners interests hence they have milked everything from this motherland over half the century and still continue to do so.

Position of PMJM is crystal clear! PMJM and this government had already made their position known. PO and puppets should not be playing politics but tow the line and support the initiative of this government of like-minded leaders which is to finally empower this country economically. We have huge debts that has accumulated over the last 50+ years and have explored all avenues to reduce but with the current systematic set up we have, there is NO WAY at all these loans/debts will be reduced. We cannot continue to collect rent and royalties forever and hope that our daily needs somehow decreases so we can save some to pay off our debts. Until and unless we change the entire strategies and line of thinking and that is by such approach nothing will change. The approach by Marape and Steven Government in amending various critical laws regarding our minerals is commendable. The government’s position regarding new oil/gas and mineral projects is ONLY to place the COUNTRY and the LANDOWNERS at a comfortable and commanding position as owners of what lies underneath their feet which in itself is the road to PNG’s economic freedom.

    • Well said. I also strongly believe the Marape/Steven government must look at reviewing and overhauling our Westminster Parliamentary Democratic system of government. It is an imported Neo-colonial tool to advance imperial capitalism interests and influence. Since 1975 it has done nothing but oppress our Independence and National aspirations. Like the virus it was meant to be, it has tremendously weakened our defenses and superiority to navigate the challenges of globalization. Sponsored foreign capitalism under the pretext of development and friendship, exploited our vulnerabilities and are enriching their economies with our wealth while they feed us with grants, aids, taxes etc etc. The Westminster Parliamentary Democratic system may work for them but not necessarily for PNG. Time we change it for a PNG made system that truly protects and safeguard our aspiration to be the richest black nation. Truly than can we be free!
