National flag carrier Air Niugini has opened up a new direct service between Cairns in Australia and Tokua, East New Britain, on a trial basis.

The airline said in a media statement that the service would further promote tourism in Papua New Guinea.

“The inaugural service commenced on May 30 with scheduled flights every Monday and Friday.”

Acting chief executive officer Simon Foo said it was a direct service and a small step in line with the Government’s directive for the airline and partner agencies to work together to enhance tourism in the country.

“After almost 40 years of operation, Air Niugini has not only built its own reputation but has been supportive in promoting Papua New Guinea as a tourist destination.

The new Cairns-Tokua route is focused on doing just that, bringing in more tourists to East New Britain and PNG,” Foo said.

He said since the flights operate every Monday and Friday, it would give tourists the choice to either stay for the weekend in Rabaul or even the whole week.

“Air Niugini is committed as ever to the continuous development of tourism in Papua New Guinea and that the airline will continue to work in partnership with the Tourism Promotion Authority and other stakeholders in promoting PNG,” Foo said.
