PAPUA New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) chairman Sanis Tsaka, pictured, says the Highlands has the opportunity to prove that it can host international matches when the SP Hunters take on the Easts Tigers in Wabag tomorrow.
This is the Hunters’ first time to host a match in the Highlands, having played in Lae (Mamose) and Port Moresby (Southern).
“This is a huge occasion for PNGRFL in partnership with (Enga Governor) Sir Peter Ipatas and the Enga government to bring the (Intrust Super Cup) ‘Country Round’ match to the heartland of rugby league in PNG for the first time,” he told The National ahead of the clash at Aipus Oval tomorrow.
“PNGRFL will use this opportunity to get local governments and partners to invest in their sporting infrastructures and provide greater support to the game.
“PNGRFL commends Sir Peter his government for the massive investment to upgrade the Aipus Oval to be one of the best stadiums in PNG with all the amenities for international games.
“Sir Peter’s support for rugby league has been exceptional and we thank him for his continued assistance.”
Tsaka said with many people from neighbouring areas expected to turn out, supporters should “enjoy the best of international footy and support both teams in the true spirit of sportsmanship”.
“More importantly, the people of Enga and Highlands have an opportunity to showcase their rich culture, environment, tradition and way of life to international and local visitors, and make an impression of their true identity,” he said.
Asked if PNGRFL would consider hosting more Hunters matches in the Highlands, Tsaka said: “We will continue to take the ‘Country Round’ every year to different parts of the country to promote the game and the team.
“There are requirements in terms of facilities and rights for hosting Queensland Cup matches or other international games and we will work with all partners in the provinces and districts to ensure they are complied with.”
