PAPUA New Guinea’s longest serving insurance company and possibly the largest – QBE Insurance (PNG) Ltd – recently donated more than K18,350 to help less fortunate children in PNG.
QBE’s general manager Mike Sherwood donated K18,350 as programme funding to NGO group, Save the Children in PNG.
It was received by programme director Bob Smyth.
Sherwood acknowledged the work of Save the Children in PNG and congratulated it for establishing “this long-term programme” aimed at helping increasing numbers of children from diverse backgrounds who attended schools and to improve quality of learning and to protect the vulnerable children from abuse.
Next year, QBE Staff would have the opportunity to volunteer and donate time to the programme activities and gain a better appreciation of the issues relating to the “most vulnerable children in PNG,” Sherwood said.
The funding support was an initiative of the QBE Foundation, launched globally last April.
“With vocational goals in mind, the foundation seeks to support individuals and groups in their endeavours to lead fulfilling, independent and successful lives,” Sherwood said.
QBE first entered the PNG market in 1899 when the company began its local operations and traded as The North Queensland Insurance Co.
Now known as QBE Insurance (PNG) Ltd, the company has three offices – the principal office in Port Moresby, the second in the regional centre of Lae, and the third in Kokopo.
As a result of acquisitions completed in 1998 and 2001, the company became the country’s leading general insurer, with a pool of “talented local staff who are growing with us,” Sherwood said.
“We have a well respected management team that includes mostly PNG citizens. This has allowed us to better assess risks in the local market and develop flexible business insurance solutions. We have built expertise in specialist areas such as marine, property, liability and workers compensation.
“Over the last few years, we have become significantly more involved in meeting the emerging needs of professionals and medium and large commercial entities that face highly complex and variable exposures in the professional risks areas. In addition we are developing a unique suite of personal lines insurance products.”
Our team is committed to providing a prompt and efficient service to our broker intermediaries and direct customers,” Sherwood said.
