Quality eyed over quantity in boxing

Sports

It is a matter of quality over quantity.
The PNG Amateur Boxing Union (PNGABU) has refocused its strategy and will send small teams of elite fighters to international events.
Only fighters who have shown that they have the potential to win medals or go further in competitions will be considered.
This ensures that the limited resources are better spent and the quality of the fighters are kept to a high standard.
Speaking to The National, PNGABU president John Avira said: “We changed our strategy from pervious Commonwealth Games.
“In the past, we used to send big boxing teams, but we are looking at the outcome and results.
“We need to be realistic about how we do things. If we can put some runs on the board, then we can sell the boxers and the sport.
“Moving forward due to our limited resources, we are only focusing on fighters who are genuine medal prospects.
“So when we go to events such as the Commonwealth Games, we give ourselves a chance to win. Out strength is in the lower weight divisions, so we will focus our efforts in those areas to get results.”
PNG’s Commonwealth Games boxing team: Thadius Katua (60kg), Charlie Keama (52kg), John Ume (64kg), Laisani Soma (60kg-female).
The team is attending a high performance training camp in Canberra, Australia, ahead of the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.
