Queen’s baton in Port Moresby for PNG leg

 THE Queen’s Baton arrived in Port Moresby on Monday and was met by the President of the Papua New Guinea Commonwealth Games Association, Sir John Dawanincura and children from St Joseph’s International school, Chantelle Gua and Jimmy Jones.

The Queen’s Baton has travelled through Asia and Australia and Papua New Guinea is the first Pacific country to host the relay.

The first part of the Queen’s Baton Relay will in Papua New Guinea begins today in Port Moresby from Independence Hill in Waigani to Amini Park in East Boroko.

People from all walks of life including current and former athletes, Members of Parliament, representatives from the government and corporate sector will turn out to participate in the Queen’s Baton Relay.

“The route has been finalized and we look forward to see the public in Port Moresby turn out in large numbers to participate in the activities on the day,” said Chairperson of the Organizing Committee, Tamzin Wardley.

The Queen’s Baton Relay in Port Moresby will start on Independence Hill in Waigani, go along the (street name) to Gordons, through to Poreporena Freeway to 5 Mile, down Sir Hubert Murray Highway, past Coronation Primary school, back up to Boroko Drive, down Bisini Drive, in to Angau Drive and through Turugu Avenue to the Amini Park where it will end.

People in the city will have the opportunity to see and cheer on the Queen’s Baton as it is passed on from one batonbearer to another during the course of the Queen’s Baton Relay.

Schools in the city will also participate in the celebration with dances, games and other activities.

Following the first leg of the Port Moresby Queen’s Baton Relay the Queen’s Baton will travel to Kavieng for the second leg of the Queen’s Baton Relay tomorrow.
