Queen’s Baton to arrive today

A GREAT tradition of the Commonwealth Games, the Queen’s Baton will arrivetoday from Australia.The Queen’s Baton relayhas been the curtain raiser tothe games since 1958.

As part of its journey to 71nations, the Baton containingQueen Elizabeth II’s message,

will stop over in PortMoresby before continuingits journey to Vanuatu onSaturday.

The Baton arrives with afour-man delegation – JasonDwyer (relay expert), Ms Parul Thapar (organisingcommittee representative),Leung Wai Tapasu Ming(Commonwealth Games

Federation representative) and Mukundan Asokan (officialphotographer).The PNG Sports

Federation and Olympic Committee and PNG Commonwealth Games Federation have invited 100

former and current athletes,administrators and officials ofthe Commonwealth Games,

as well as VIPs from governmentand corporate sponsorsto participate in the 40km

Queen’s Baton relay.The Queen’s Baton Relaywill take place tomorrow and

starting at Independence Hilland proceeding to various points around the city before

ending at Sir John Guise Stadium.The Queen’s Baton was last in the country in October

2005 prior to the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne,where travelled through Goroka, Lae, Rabaul and Port Moresby.
