K AUBA Boros did not have any formal education but always gave his all into whatever job he is given, acquiring skills as he went along through hard work, dedication and loyalty.
It was why he was awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) in honour of his services to the public.
He has been working as a driver, self-taught handyman and mechanic at the Busu Secondary School in Lae for more than 30 years.
Kauba, 61, is from Kepil village in the Sinesine-Yongomugl district of Chimbu. Boros is married to Sabina who is from nearby Igedi village. They have seven children: John, Michael, Don, Becca, Marambi, Dee Margareth and Amba.
The only education he received was from the New Tribes Mission who taught him over five months how to pronounce certain words.
In 1975, when his father gave out land to other family members but not him, Kauba left for Lae to look for a job to support himself. He lived with the people from Rai Coast and Teptep at Bumbu Gravel.
“I sold betel nut and cigarettes. One day, a brother approached me and asked me to drive cars. He got me a learner’s permit for K2. I started learning how to drive.
“In 1977, I got a Class One driver’s licence and started working with Barclay Contractors as a driver.”
When the heavy machinery operators left for lunch, Kauba would jump on the excavators, graders, rollers and loaders to get a feel of how to operate them. Later, with the guidance of work mates, Kauba eventually could operate the machines too.
He went on to work for companies such as Charlie Barns, Waghi Valley Transport, Bagua Taxi, Kimbung Trading and Namasu Holdings.
On March 3, 1987, Boros joined Busu Secondary School as a driver, handyman and mechanic. He has served under seven principals.
He remembers receiving only K70 a fortnight as his wages.
“The school (financial status) was not good when I joined. But I remained to serve the school up to today. I’m not a qualified mechanic. But when the school vehicles broke down, I fixed them. I love my job and dedicated my time to my job. I don’t have a proper education but I give my best to whatever job is given to me.”
He carried out some general repair and maintenance duties at Busu. His wife Sabina also works at the school as a cleaner.
“I have a clean record as a driver. I have not caused any accidents, nor suspended nor faced disciplinary action.”
He thanks those who recommended him for the award.
“I am so happy to be recognised for my job. It will motivate me to do more as I have many more years left to serve Busu.”
His advice to young people: “Do not do your jobs just to impress others. Do it out of your heart. Your just reward awaits you.”
