Rabaul, Marat an example for all

Letters

THE choir singing at Maltech in Rabaul during the declaration of the newly elected Rabaul Open MP Graham Piniau
Rumet speaks volumes about democracy.
I saw the short video of the beautiful signing and pray such togetherness and celebrations will happen during the remaining declarations.
I have nothing but respect for the ousted MP Dr Allan Marat, who lost the seat by just three votes, for gracefully accepting defeat.
I don’t recall reading about a sitting MP, in the past, displaying such a gesture.
His quote in yesterday’s newspaper – “Election is a race. Whoever wins, wins, that is the people’s choice, so let it be” – tells us, that is how a leader thinks.
He goes on to say the General Election 2022 was a tough one, compared with previous elections in the past 20 years.
Then we had re-elected New Ireland Governor Sir Julius Chan adding, he had never experienced so much uncertainty surrounding an election than the General Election 2022.
What does that tell us?
Anyway that aside, the Rabaul people have shown the country how they celebrated.
Let’s all celebrate with singing and dancing peacefully and not with guns and knives amidst heavily armed security forces.
