RABAUL district on Monday launched its first sealed road project under the district services improvement programme (DSIP), a first for Papua New Guinea.
District administrator Wilson Matava said the 2km stretch of road at Gelagela was the first DSIP-funded road sealing under the K10 million funding and sealed at a cost of K920,000.
He said the Rabaul JDP&BPC approved this project in 2009 and implementation began last year. It was completed recently.
The contract was awarded to Dalmine Enterprise by the Provincial Supply and Tenders Board and the sealing was undertaken by its sub-contractor Covec Ltd, the only road sealing company in the province.
East New Britain Governor Leo Dion officially launched the road, saying he was proud as this was the first project covered under DSIP funding.
“Unfortunately in many places DSIP funding have gone missing and Rabaul district and ENB are proud that DSIP funding is at work,” Dion said
He appealed to the people of Gelagela to look after projects provided under the restoration programme.
Rabaul JDP&BPC chairman Dr Allan Marat commended his team and partners for their efforts into making the project a reality and for making it the first sealed road project under DSIP in the country.
