Rabaul town clamps down on silt build-up

Islands, Normal

LOCAL contractors in East New Britain province who collect stones in Rabaul town for their construction works have been warned to stop.
Rabaul town manager Freddy Lemeki warned contractors collecting stones from the streets to stop because “it is causing silt to build up on the streets and in the drains”.
Mr Lemeki said: “The contractors have been collecting stones in Rabaul for their contract work instead of at the appropriate site in Warangoi. They are creating a hazard.”
He warned that police have been informed of the stoppage and any contractor found defying it would be dealt with accordingly.
Mr Lemeki also cautioned motorists that the road from Blanche Street and Dawapia road junction had been closed.
He clarified that sections of the road from Tropicana to Rabaul Shipping were closed due to heavy floods and soil erosion.
