Radio station gets facelift
The National, Thursday 29th of November, 2012
THE National Broadcasting Corporation Radio Western Highlands is improving its buildings and programmes.
Station manager Jacob Kaka said the renovations would cost more than K100,000.
Kaka said the provincial radio station had completed its first phase of upgrading, putting up a sign board and fencing at a cost of more than K30,000.
He said the third phase would involve the maintenance of the building and the final stage would comprise fencing between the Dokona and Agilta Kona buildings.
“This building was built in the 1960s and it needs maintenance. That is why we are working hard to have it complete so that it can stand as a provincial radio station.”
“It was a regional radio station before and now I’m trying to renovate and improve some of its programmes that we are running too.”
He said funding came from the National Broadcasting Corporation and materials from hardware companies operating in the province.
Kaka said the NBC gave them K3,000 while the rest of the support came from hardware companies such as Tininga, Mountain Plumbing and Hardware House, which had helped with materials instead of paying cash for the advertisements they ran.
“This is my vision to make this provincial radio station to look better. We are now looking forward to a major project and this is the short wave transmitter,” Kaka said.
Kaka said that was relay programmes to other centres.
“This is because we can run development issues, HIV/AIDS programmes, climate change and other issues that need to be broadcast to the people.
“I strongly believe that radio is scared and can help a lot when it is well looked after through funding and support.”
He said apart from the development and programmes new computers had been installed.
Kaka said NBC Western Highlands served the neighbouring Jiwaka, and parts of Enga and Southern Highlands.
