Rai to take up post as permanent representative to UN
THE former director-general of the trade division in the Department of Trade, Commerce and Industry Max Rai will soon take up his post as the country’s permanent representative to the United Nations.
Rai’s four-year contract was effective from July 2015.
He had served as a diplomat to China, Federated States of Micronesia, Marshall Islands, United States, Germany and Japan.
Rai has been in the Foreign Service for 32 years.
He joined the Department of Trade, Commerce and Industry on April 28, 2014. Department secretary John Andrias thanked Rai for his work and contribution to the department.
“Without your help, I don’t think the trade division would not have come this far,” Andrias said.
“You have been a good mentor to many within the department and will be sadly missed,” he said.
Rai warned that Papua New Guinea had to be careful when signing trade agreements.
He said PNG has to ensure that both parties benefitted regionally and globally from the agreement.
