AUTHORITIES have raided illegal betel nut markets in Port Moresby following public complaints, says National Capital District Commission urban safety division director Paul Komboi.

Komboi said he deployed NCDC police reservists who began a week-long operation starting at Manu Auto Port yesterday.

“These markets are an eyesore to the image of the city and at times obstruct traffic,” Komboi said.

He said the reservists, with assistance from other police units, went to Manu yesterday around 4am and closed the market area beside the Taurama bus stop.

He urged the public and vendors at the market to help keep the city clean.

“I am appealing to other vendors not to harbour betel nut vendors because if you do, we will remove the market and move you all down to Sabama market,” Komboi said.

He said NCD Governor Powes Parkop was concerned over the waste of public funds due to the attitude and behaviour of people.

He said markets at Renbo, Hohola and Gerehu would also be removed and roadside food markets beside schools in the city would also be monitored and controlled in the operation.

This he said was to ensure that the health and safety of the public, particularly, children were maintained.
