THE extreme wet weather being experienced on the mainland is wreaking havoc on the Highlands Highway and endangering the travelling public.
A trip down the highway yesterday revealed many sections undergoing urgent clearance and repair work while traffic was reduced to single-lane passage.
Landslides, slips and sedimentary buildups from flooded rivers and creeks were evident on many sections of the highway.
The worst hit sections were Daulo and Kassam Pass, where landslips took away portions of the road, forcing motorists to travel at snail’s pace along the dangerous single lanes.
The chain of wide-load vehicles that supply the highlands provinces with their domestic and industrial needs are also at risk from the persistent slippery conditions.
Many run-offs and collisions have already been reported in recent weeks and many more are anticipated if the wet conditions persist.
