Re-open varsity campus in EHP
The National, Wednesday 21st November, 2012
IT is sad to learn that Eastern Highlands is one of the three provinces with-out a university (UPNG Open Campus).
How could a province with a burgeoning population of half a million people and hundreds of school leavers ignore this important institution to transform the lives and careers of thousands of students by providing matriculation and university level courses to those who are unable to make it through the formal education system?
The centre was established in the province and had been running for some time but was closed down due to the sheer negligence by concerned authorities and the political head in the province.
As a result, a lot of students, career public servants and others are denied a chance to matriculate, upgrade or enhance their qualifications with the University of Papua New Guinea.
This trend cannot continue, since the number of school leavers in the province is doubling and most of them will not continue at a tertiary institution or elsewhere.
Hence, it is crucial that the university campus be re-established with the
financial backing from the provincial government, the eight local MPs and the governor.
This initiative must be headed by the governor by allocating funds to build classrooms, office and a science laboratory somewhere, preferably
in Goroka, where students can utilise these facilities to boost their learning and further their education.
The governor must also liaise with the University of PNG and appoint a competent and an experience director.
