A RECORD number of teams in the Fairfax Volleyball Association in Port Moresby have impressed the competition organisers.
After three weeks of pre-season matches, the association started its proper season over the weekend.
Competition manager Nuga Dick said eight clubs were confirmed to take part this year.
The clubs have teams in the eight divisions, totalling 51 teams.
The divisions are men’s premier, men’s division one, men’s A-grade and men’s Under-21 and women’s premier, division one, A-grade and Under-21.
“That’s the biggest number we’ve seen,” Dick said.
“In 2017, we had 43 teams. I think Fairfax volleyball is growing with a lot of interest. We have a new club joining this year called the Neighbours from Baruni.
“All these years, the people in Baruni have been involved in rugby league and other sports, but now it’s good to see that they are showing interest in volleyball. The affiliation fee for clubs this year is K1500 and player fee is K30. Our deadline is next month.
“Those clubs or players who fail to pay their fees will pay a fine of K100 per game.”
