THE judicial recount for the Chimbu provincial seat started peacefully on Saturday in Goroka, Electoral Commissioner Patilias Gamato says.
He told The National yesterday that 40 police men and women from the northern command were assigned to provide security for the recount, which is currently underway at the National Sport Institute.
He did not give further details on the progress of the recount but said counting was continuing smoothly.
The Waigani National Court on Nov 27 last year upheld an election petition filed by former Chimbu Governor, Noah Kool, challenging the victory of Michael Dua in the 2017 national election and ordered for a judicial recount.
The Electoral Commission set Lae as the initial counting venue but was unable to do so as a result of protest by supporters of Dua over the venue.
The commission then reviewed its decision and chose Goroka.
Gamato said counting was progressing well under the watch of his deputy Simon Sinai.
