Recruit expatriates to teach English
IT is not only Grade 12 students who cannot speak and write good English.
Students in tertiary institutions are the same.
In tertiary institutions, students hardly communicate in English, they mostly speak Tok Pisin.
I believe the issue is with graduate teachers from teachers colleges who enroll students with very low grade point averages.
These teachers cannot speak and write in good English.
I visited my child at the University Of Technology and saw that students speaking Tok Pisin most of the time.
I was told by some university staff that students start by answering questions in English but struggle to explain their answers fluently so they use Tok Pisin instead.
This is pathetic and unbecoming of university students who are supposed to be the cream of university education in Papua New Guinea.
One solution is for the Education Department and the State to recruit teachers from English-speaking countries to come and teach our children.
This will improve the standard of spoken and written English.
