GENESIS bounced back from their 1-1 draw with Hekari United with a 5-0 win over Port Moresby Academy in the Women’s National Soccer League at Papua New Guinea Football Stadium on Saturday.
Forward Kelestah Mwawesi scored the opening goal in the first half followed by goals from skipper Yvonne Gabong, Julie Wama and Rumona Morris.
Morris was recruited from Port Moresby City during the transfer window last week, along with Haiyap Israel — both played their first match with Genesis in Saturday’s round six.
Morris performed exceptionally well in dictating play for Genesis, scoring two goals in the second half and was awarded the player of the match by sponsor bmobile.
“Morris and Israel contributed a lot to the result and we are pleased to have recruited them,” Genesis coach Percy Mataio said.
“We know they are quality players and they will deliver positive results.”
Mataio said their match against Academy was about the team and utilising each player’s abilities.
“We’ve been playing too much individually, so we want our players to work and achieve our goals together,” he said.
“It didn’t show in the first half but when everybody came together towards the end, it started to show glimpses of what we wanted to achieve in the game.”
Meanwhile, in the opening match of the triple-header, City continued their form from last week’s win with a 5-0 victory against National Capital District.
Despite losing four of their key players — Jacobeth Bani, Getta Kambar (studies), Morris and Israel (Genesis) — coach Frederica Sakette put together a strong squad who were led by Gloria Laeli.
