A Rohingya refugee died after jumping out of a bus which was taking refugees to Lorengau town, in Manus, provincial police commander Chief Inspector David Yapu says.
“He jumped out of the bus at about 11.15am today. The bus normally picks them up in the morning and takes them to Lorengau town for them to do shopping, marketing and just generally relaxing,” Yapu said.
“The bus later brings them to the camp in Lorengau ward one. Usually there are security guards on the bus. But somehow he jumped out of the bus on to the hard bitumen and died.”
Yapu believed the man meant to commit suicide.
He was with the other refugees who moved into the new camp from the Lombrum Regional Processing Centre in November.
There are now fewer than 600 refugees because a number of them have been sent to the United State to settle.
It is understood that the man is the seventh refugee to die in Manus.
Meanwhile, a refugee was charged with damaging property after an attempted arson on Sunday.
The suspect, Yousef Hashemi Jedani, 28, from Iran, is in custody at the Lorengau police station.
He was charged after a fire was lit in a 70-man campsite on Sunday.
The fire started in the lounge where the refugee was living and spread quickly. Yapu said quick response by Paladin and Kingfisher Security helped bring the fire under control.
