Manus police are seeking an Afghanistan refugee over the alleged sexual abuse of a 14-year-old girl.
Police commander David Yapu said yesterday that the victim was a primary school students from the Los Negros local level government area.
He said the victim was lured with cash by the refugee, who started to persistently abuse her at Salamei block.
The incident occurred between May 19 and June 1.
Yapu said the victim had been interviewed by police and statements obtained from other witnesses.
She has been referred to Lorengau General Hospital for medical examination.
Yapu said police would pick up suspect and have him charged for sexual penetration of a minor.
“I appeal to the parents of young girls to take care of their daughters,” he said.
“Do not let them walk around and be lured by refugees for money or other goods.”
Yapu said the refugees used money provided by Australia to lure young women to satisfy their sexual desires.
“This is a bad trend and insult to the tradition and cultures of Manus people,” he said.
“Manus people have Christian values and principles and will not entertain such immoral practices from refugees or foreigners.”
He said police would work hard to ensure laws and rules were followed and adhered by the refugees on the island.
