FOUR former residents of the Manus refugee processing centre have secured permanent employment and will settle in the country, an official says.

This was revealed to The National yesterday by JDA Wokman Limited, a recruitment consultancy company engaged by the PNG Immigration and Citizenship Services Authority to assist refugees on Manus resettle in the country by securing jobs for them.

Claude Temokang, a project assistant with JDA Workman, said the four refugees were the first to secure permanent employment in the country.

He said the four refugees started work on Monday with Lae Builders and Contractors Limited. They are Loghman Sawari from Iran, Basim Alobeidi Almoftaji from Iraq, Yaser Afsa from Iran and Mojeeb Mohammed from Sudan, who has a Bachelors Degree in Information Technology.

“Although some refugees occasionally engage in casual employment with businesses in Manus, such as City Pharmacy and the Department of Works, the four were the first to secure permanent employment in PNG,” Temokang said.

“Under the JDA Manus Refugee Resettlement (JMRR) project, we are working with prospective clients, currently in Lae and Port Moresby, to provide employment for the refugees to help in their resettlement in PNG.

“Some of these refugees have skills and qualifications that are currently in demand in the PNG employment market.

“We believe in integration to up-skill the local workforce.”
